History

This beautiful city was founded in 1822 on what can only be called swampland. It was not until 1899 that a portion of the land was transformed into fisheries that still dot the landscape today. Up until 1968, visitors to the town flocked to local health spas, called sanitariums, and lavish hotels. The popular mineral springs and spas were said to have amazing health benefits.

Today, the city boasts a number of locally-owned eateries and shops. Thanks to a low number of residents, the area is able to maintain its small-town feel while still offering everything a young family is looking for.

Parks and Recreation

Jimmy Nash City Park is the most popular green space in the area. It is not only the largest park in the city, but it offers several special features. Swim in the public pool, take a walk on the paved trail, hike along the more than two miles of paths, or host a picnic in one of eight shelters. Tennis courts, basketball goals and a playground are also available in the park.

Other city parks include Mulberry Street Park, Victory Park and Doris Daily Park. The recreation center holds seasonal sports programs for young and old alike. Summer programs are especially popular among youth in the area.

Attractions and Activities

If you do not feel like sitting at home, you do not have to. The city is home to a candy kitchen, Cedar Creek Winery, Hunters Honey Farm, and Morgan-Monroe State Forest. Spend an afternoon at Traderbaker Flea Market looking for a great deal, or admire the work of local artists at Art Sanctuary of Indiana.
